Should You Be Concerned About AI Interviews?
Artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming more and more prevalent in our society. With the rise of AI, people have concerns about its use in the job interviewing process. While this is a topic that all applicants should pay attention to, you don't have to worry about the use of AI interviewing technology!
AI interviews have been known for issues regarding demographics. Keeping those in mind, companies have worked tirelessly to ensure that their AI interview tools are becoming increasingly inclusive and more robust with each new iteration. This goes beyond just designing it with these pitfalls in mind as they also supplement reliability tests with a human follow-up. For example, if an AI did not detect any facial movement during an AI interview, the interview would be flagged and require the hiring manager/interview reviewer to view the applicant's interview. Companies like to include human factors within the interview process to check for inconsistencies and improve the system as needed.
AI technologies are trained to leave out biases, unlike humans. If an interview is flagged because of prejudice or bias, the company fixes it immediately by retraining and updating the technology. However, you can't do the same thing with humans. In that sense, AI technologies have increased diversity over time.
The main concern with AI interviewing still falls on the hiring manager. When setting up the AI interview, they must ensure that they create a fair pool of questions to target a diverse pool of applicants.
If you have concerns over the AI technology you are interviewing with, you can always reach out to the company for answers and clarity.
Fortunately, laws are also moving in the right direction to protect applicants using AI. A law in Illinois that went into effect in January 2022 states that if any company solely uses AI for the entry-level interview process, they will need to submit a yearly demographics report of who was accepted and who was rejected to the Illinois state government. This law will help ensure AI technologies aren't biased towards candidates. If you want to read more about this law, click here!
